Curiouser and Curiouser

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you could live forever? What would happen if aliens attacked? Why sex is fun? We were asked the same questions when the Discovery Network approached us to develop a new campaign for their series Curiosity.

Our challenge was to develop a series of ads and accompanying eDM that best captured our sense of curiosity, asking the most fundamental questions facing the world. Each episode focused on a single enduring question in science, technology and society. The questions were so arresting, the most challenging part for us was to evoke a positive reaction to some very direct questions.

Here are our some of our initial concept ideas:

With sensibilities in certain regions of Asia-Pacific, a more subtle approach was required as well as delivering a more clearer message to the audience. Here are the final results:

Instagram.ography

One year ago Instagr.am launched into the world. Now nearly 50,000 people sign up each and every day to become part of the world’s most vibrant photo community – creating a catalog of imagery that allows us to explore the world in ways never thought possible.

Instagr.am is a hugely popular photo-filter app that now has more than 9 million users and 250 million shared photos. It’s success is partly due to Steve Jobs, without whom Instagram would never have come into being. Every snapshot taken with Instagram is possible because of the hard work of timeless innovators at Apple.

With it's Facebook and Twitter sharing capabilities and regular updates it is sure to gain even further ground... rumours are also surfacing for a Blackberry and Android version too.

We've been using Instagra.am for a while now, here are some of the images we've taken in the past, you can see more on our Flickr page.

Wallpaper and Paste

How do you get visitors to return to your site on a regular basis, that's always a question we find ourselves asking. Apart from ensuring the work is worth coming back to you can try offering freebies.

We had already developed some graphic images for our website, so it seemed an obvious progression to adapt those images for use as wallpapers. Offering different sizes for different uses i.e; iPhone, iPad including various Mac screens we ensured we catered for most needs. By releasing one set at a time, on bi-monthly basis, we also (hopefully) ensured a steady return of wallpaper fans.

iPhone and iPad template files are common on the web, we grabbed ours from
iPad/iPhone .psd files  The .psd file provides you with the iPad/iPhone in a layered photoshop file, you can then strip away the elements you don't need, ie. the iPad home screen, allowing you to drop in your own visual.

Tilt-shift makes a resurgence

We are all loving this miniature tilt-shift photography resurgence which you may remember seeing back in the Tom Cruise film Minority Report (2002).The images are described as using "tilt-shift", but the term is something of a misnomer because shift is seldom involved and is usually unrelated to the effect produced. However, not wanting to be left out, we got the app and did some of our own! (TiltShiftGen for those interested)

But if you want to see how the pros do it check out some of the work by Keith Loutit.

Migrating to WordPress

We always seem to be in a state of flux at Qube, ever evolving our digital presence. Our old site was cumbersome and needed a tech wizard to update most of the time, so after much thought, we decided to migrate the site to WordPress. Although, to begin with, getting to grips with the user interface was a little challenging, it was worth the pain. Once mastered we then went about deconstructing the theme to make it Qubesque.
