Instagram.ography

One year ago Instagr.am launched into the world. Now nearly 50,000 people sign up each and every day to become part of the world’s most vibrant photo community – creating a catalog of imagery that allows us to explore the world in ways never thought possible.

Instagr.am is a hugely popular photo-filter app that now has more than 9 million users and 250 million shared photos. It’s success is partly due to Steve Jobs, without whom Instagram would never have come into being. Every snapshot taken with Instagram is possible because of the hard work of timeless innovators at Apple.

With it's Facebook and Twitter sharing capabilities and regular updates it is sure to gain even further ground... rumours are also surfacing for a Blackberry and Android version too.

We've been using Instagra.am for a while now, here are some of the images we've taken in the past, you can see more on our Flickr page.

Waldorf Dressing

We were recently commissioned to Art Direct / Style and Produce a 6 day photoshoot at the new Waldorf Astoria on the Bund, Shanghai. The Waldorf is probably most famous for its  salad which was first created at the New York Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1896 not by a chef but by the maître d'hôtel, (dining room manager).

The hotel had only just opened, which can sometimes be a challenge for shoots based on past experiences, it can be compared to having 1,000 people who have just moved into a new home and you ask one of them where do you keep the teaspoons... thankfully this wasn't the case. The shoot went like clockwork!

Room with a view... sometimes

Behind the scenes is never glamorous

Great place to play with Instagram.

Quentin also had the opportunity to shoot some images, here's a selection below.

Working with Four Seasons guidelines

Recently Four Seasons Hotel Sydney underwent some refurbishments and as part of that development Qube were commissioned to produce a new set of marketing collateral.

Working within existing Four Seasons guidelines two distinct looks were created. (seen in the first few slides) One direction, which we particularly liked, was the 'art gallery' theme which used colourful bold graphic interpretations of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House to set the stage. The other depicted Sydney as the jewel that crowned Australia with the use of breathtaking city skylines images.

After much searching the cover image was finally sourced through the Tourism Australia Board image library who had some stunning images available for us. A unique line illustration of the Sydney Opera House 'sails' was used as a simple spot gloss varnish graphic in the final printed brochure and kit folder.

Overall, a really stunning piece which we were all very happy with.

Tilt-shift makes a resurgence

We are all loving this miniature tilt-shift photography resurgence which you may remember seeing back in the Tom Cruise film Minority Report (2002).The images are described as using "tilt-shift", but the term is something of a misnomer because shift is seldom involved and is usually unrelated to the effect produced. However, not wanting to be left out, we got the app and did some of our own! (TiltShiftGen for those interested)

But if you want to see how the pros do it check out some of the work by Keith Loutit.

Four Seasons dynasty arrives in China

We have just completed an epic 16 month project for the soon to be opened Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at Westlake (October 2010).

Westlake, with its famous freshwater lake is located in the historic centre of Hangzhou, in the Zhejiang provence of Eastern China. A popular haunt since the Qing Dynasty, it was inevitable that sooner or later it would get the 5* treatment.

Our role was to capture the essence of the property and its surroundings, from its beautifully landscaped gardens to opulent dining experiences. Simplicity was the key. Lotus ponds carpeted the lake which we took as the focal point for the collateral. A series of full colour photographs of lotus flowers were applied to guest collateral, while a simpler graphic was developed for smaller items. Four restaurant identities were also developed for the properties food and beverage outlets along with their respective restaurant menus.

The challenge with these projects is always the ability to coordinate the feedback from various key decision makers around the globe as well as ensuring timelienes are met. 16 months may seem a long time but with each key change came its own set of challenges. Working alongside world renowned interior design agency Spin (http://www.ds-spin.com) also ensured we were kept on our toes without standing on any others!

A thoroughly rewarding project. Some of the samples can be seen here, or you can visit our main website to view the complete set.
